Most people only notice their decking when it becomes a problem. A green, dirty-looking deck doesn’t just look unsightly; it can become slippery and a hazard to you, your family and visitors.
I’ve cleaned hundreds of decks across Swansea, and the story is almost always the same. A bit of algae starts spreading, the wood loses its colour, and before long, the whole thing looks beyond saving. It usually isn’t. With the right approach, the majority of decking comes back looking stunning once cleaned, treated and oiled correctly.
Swansea’s climate is not ideal for timber. The area has plenty of rain, plenty of shade, and enough mild temperatures to keep algae, moss, and mould thriving all year round. Wood is porous, and it absorbs moisture, and once that moisture sits in the grain, green growth can follow quickly.
The surface you walk on also suffers constant wear. Foot traffic, garden furniture, BBQs, kids, and dogs, it all takes its toll. And if a deck hasn’t been sealed or oiled properly (or at all), the wood starts to grey and crack far sooner than it should.
Many people try pressure washing it themselves. Sometimes it helps in the short term. But high-pressure water, if used incorrectly, can actually raise the wood grain, making it rougher and more likely to harbour dirt and moisture in the future. It’s one of those jobs where doing it wrong can make things worse, and sometimes can be costly if damaged
No two decks are identical: the type of timber, hardwood or softwood; the age; how much shade it gets; and whether it’s ever been cleaned professionally and oiled.
Here is what our process looks like:
Step 1 — Assessment. Before anything else, we ask for photos to be sent or a video. We can identify the type of wood and often can see if it is structurally sound and how much soiling and algae may be present.
Step 2 — Soft wash treatment. For the majority of decks, I start with a soft wash, a low-pressure application of a specialist cleaning solution that breaks down biological growth (algae, moss, lichen, mould). You can read more about our softwashing treatment here.
Step 3 — Controlled pressure wash. Once the treatment has done its work, controlled pressure washing lifts the residue and opens up the wood grain. Done at the right pressure for the timber type, this stage usually transforms the appearance dramatically.
Step 4 — Sanding (where needed). On older decks with raised grain, splintering or stubborn staining, light sanding smooths things off and gives a proper base for sealing.
Step 5 — Sealing and oiling. This step is often skipped, but it determines how long the results last. A quality oil or sealant protects against UV damage, moisture ingress and future biological growth. We recommend using oil, although there are sealants on the market, such as smartseal wood decking sealant
A customer living in Caswell, Swansea, got in touch with us previously to clean their timber decking and wooden fence panels. They had previously applied a water-based product, and they were not happy with the final result
We used a specific ‘stripping’ product to remove the old paint and rinsed it off using low pressure.
Once fully dried, we applied a good-quality oil from WoodcareUK and the colour of choice that the customer chose.
The final result was that the decking truly transformed and protected itself from the harsh elements of living here in South Wales.
Honestly, it depends on the size of the deck and the condition it’s in. A small, relatively clean deck is going to cost less than a large one that hasn’t been touched in four years and is covered in thick green algae. We charge a minimum of £250.00 for decking cleaning in Swansea.
Most residential decks take between two and four hours to clean. Larger decks, or ones that need sanding and oiling after the clean, will take two visits, as the decking must be left to dry before oiling. We also clean the surrounding walls, windows and UPVC of your home that we may have made dirty during our deck cleaning process. You can take a closer look here at our UPVC Cleaning Services.
No, not at all. So long as I have access to the decking and outside water tap, homeowners do not need to be present.
Once cleaned, you can walk on it the same day. If, however, you request that we oil the decking, we recommend waiting 24 hours before walking on it or placing heavy furniture back on it.
Not if it’s done correctly. The risk comes from using too much pressure, the wrong cleaning product or holding the pressure nozzle too close to the wood.
This is probably the question I get asked most, and the honest answer is, more often than not, it’s always worth cleaning first and seeing what’s underneath. Green and grey decking often looks terrible on the surface but cleans up really well. That said, if boards are rotten, cracked through, or structurally unsafe, these should and can be replaced. There’s no point spending money on a clean if the wood underneath isn’t sound. If you send me a photo or video, I’ll give you my honest opinion and advice.
In most Swansea gardens, especially those with shade or facing north, cleaning once a year is usually sufficient. Decking that gets full sun and excellent airflow can sometimes go longer. If a good quality wood oil is applied after cleaning, you’ll find it stays cleaner for much longer between seasons. We use and recommend wood oil from a company called WoodcareUK.
Yes. The cleaning solutions I use are biodegradable and eco-friendly once dry. I take care around garden beds, lawns and planted areas, and I always manage any run-off properly. If you have specific concerns, such as a garden, If you have a pond or particularly sensitive plants nearby, please mention the situation before booking so that I can provide appropriate advice.
Yes, though the approach is different. Composite decking doesn’t need sanding or oiling, but it still attracts algae and surface staining, especially in shaded areas. A soft wash and a low-pressure rinse is usually all that’s needed, and it always comes up really well.
I’m based in Swansea and cover the city and surrounding areas, including Mumbles, Sketty, Gower, Llansamlet, Morriston, Gorseinon, Pontarddulais, and most places in between. If you’re not sure, just ask.
